Got a loan, but no customer service.
Before I give my critique, I wish to state that FBC Mortgage managed to secure for me a mortgage allowing me to purchase my first home, and for their efforts, I am grateful. They did “get the job done”, and in the end, that’s all that really mattered to me. Unfortunately, that’s the most and best I can say of their services. To preface, I hold a degree in Communication, and work in a field high in customer service. I am expected to not only be stellar in the technical portion of my career, but be equally strong in ensuring our clients are made to feel they are getting the best possible customer service that goes along with our primary jobs. Mike and his team do not seem to understand they do in fact work in a customer-service job. Now, Mike Bedell and his team came highly recommended to me and my initial discussions with him six months prior to securing a mortgage were productive and useful. But when I began my home purchase with him this past April, Mike’s demeanor and attitude with me was immediately notably and entirely different. Throughout my experience, Mike and FBC Mortgage made me feel that I was always bothering them in my endeavor to smoothly secure a mortgage and be completed with documentation far ahead of the close date. Worse, Mike proved himself to be a poor communicator, both in his lack of clear explanations of any critical processes and information sharing and in his listening abilities. Though I made it clear from day-one that I was unexperienced in home-buying and would be relying on their guidance and expertise, by the last weeks of the experience, I had to take sole initiative to continually contact FBC to be sure they had all materials they needed in order to be completed prior to close. I even let them know the weekend prior to my close, I would be traveling and unavailable. This did not seem to register to Mike and his team. Despite my asking them to anticipate documentation, I was still being asked to submit documentation within hours of my close appointment. And even with that, I did not receive the keys to my home until the following day due to the mistakes made by FBC, Watson Title and my realtor. Mike and his team came up with excuses as to why my FHA loan was so difficult, problematic, involved, etc etc etc, despite the fact that they are a mortgage company and that is all they do. At one point, Mike’s colleague went as far as to blame me, their customer, for the delays in the approval process. That’s right – I’m about to give them a big chunk of my money over the next 30 years, but it’s MY fault they can’t get a deal closed in a timely manner. Again, have we lost sight of who the customer is? Had I not been entirely focused on winning the prize, Mike and his team would have been immediately fired. And I am disappointed I had to convey that to him in some very intensive argumentative phone calls. All of that is, luckily, history and, as I said earlier, they got the job done. But there is absolutely no way I would recommend them to anyone. Mike; you and your team need to step up your customer service sensibilities. Even if you wish to label me a “difficult” or “unusual” or “high-maintenance” customer, I was your customer to serve and service. It’s time for you to elevate your performance. Taking referred customers for granted is a sure fire way to ensure your company withers. So please use this difficult loan processing experience and do better for the next similar person like me who comes along and asks for your help. They deserve FBC’s best for their hard-earned money of which you are taking.
